Welcome to the AmericaFree.TV MSDP Status Page

The AmericaFree.TV Internet Status web pages provide information to describe the growth and general status of the Multicast Enabled Internet, as seen from the AmericaFree.TV Autonomous System (AS 16517).

This "MSDP" page provides information about the inter-domain Multicast usage using the Multicast Source Disccovery Protocol (MSDP), in particular the location and use of groups, sources and Rendezvous Points (RP's).

NOTE : Full logging of the AmericaFree.TV MSDP SA Cache only started on Sep 27 11:49:36 EDT 2001; the information on this page commences then.

A file containing the MSDP data used in these plots is available here.

Figure 1 : Number of Internet Addresses Sourcing Multicast Traffic, and the total number of Groups involved.

Figure 1 shows the total size of the MSDP SA-Cache, and the number of ASM sources in use at any time. There is one entry for each (S,G) pair. The number of ASM groups is also shown.

Figure 2 : An Estimate of the total Multicast Audience.

Figure 2 shows the number of entries minus the number of groups. If each group represented a one to many broadcast, this would equal to the number of active receivers. Note : Figure 2 only reflects group members that participate in either sourcing content or sourcing RTCP like control information; a completely receive-only group member cannot be monitored using MSDP.

Figure 3 : Average Number of ASM Sources Per Group

Figure 3 shows the ratio of the number of Multicast sources and the total number of groups. This plot thus represents the average number of sources for each ASM group.

Figure 4 : The Number of Active Rendezvous Points / MSDP Peers versus time.

Figure 4 shows the number of MSDP Peers / Rendezvous Points (RP's) with multicast sources as a function of time.

Figure 5 : Number of Members in the Largest Active Group

Figure 5 shows the size, in terms of number of members, of the largest SINGLE group as announced by MSDP. Again, this only reflects group members that participate in either sourcing content or sourcing RTCP like control information; a completely receive-only group member cannot be monitored using MSDP.
